Public Transportation in China

August 4, 20233 minute read

China has a comprehensive public transportation system that includes buses, taxis, bike-sharing, subways, trains, and airplanes. This article provides an overview of the different modes of public transportation available in China, their advantages, and disadvantages.

Bus

The bus is a convenient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation in China. The fare is charged by distance, with a minimum of 1 yuan and a maximum of 10-12 yuan, depending on the bus. Passengers can pay by cash, Yikatong, the Easy Pass app, or Apple Pay. Most buses are air-conditioned, and the weather and temperature do not affect the passage much. However, buses have the disadvantage of uncertain arrival times and susceptibility to traffic conditions. Children under 120cm in height do not need a ticket, and pets are not allowed on buses.

Taxi/Didi

Taxis are the most convenient and quickest way to get around the city. They are available all day, and passengers can call taxis at any time, anywhere. The flag-down rate for the first several kilometers varies from 5 to more than 10 yuan, depending on the city and area. DiDi, like Uber, is a great alternative transportation mode, especially on nights out when the subway is closed.

Bike-sharing

Bike-sharing has become a popular way to travel in China, with many cities providing bike-sharing services to encourage low-carbon travel. Users can scan the barcode on the back of a bike to download the app, such as Hello Bicycle, Didi Qingju Bicycle, or Meituan Bicycle. Bike-sharing is a convenient and affordable way to travel, and it is not hard to come by.

Subway

The subway is a popular way of travel in China, especially in today’s increasingly congested urban traffic. The subway is fast and smooth, and its advantage is more prominent. The subway opens around 6 am, and the fare is roughly divided into two pricing methods: one is by mileage, and the other is by interval.

Train/High-speed Rail

The high-speed train is one of China’s Four Great New Inventions. Taking the high-speed train in China is efficient, and they travel at 250-350 km/h (155-217 mph). Most places have the subway at or near the station, so it’s very convenient when you reach your destination. You can also get a first-class or second-class, and there are even overnight trains in China.

Airplane

With the rise of airport construction, airplanes have gradually become another means of travel in China. By June 2022, there are about 5,581 air routes. Most airlines and airports provide world-class services and facilities. They are all very affordable.
