Will CSCA Cutoff Scores Keep Rising Year After Year

According to many agents, students are still hesitant when it comes to the CSCA exam. Quite a few are not even fully aware of what the exam entails, let alone prepared to take it.
Instead of taking action, many students continue to hold onto the following assumptions:
“CSCA has only just been introduced – the exam can't be that difficult yet.”
“If I'm able to apply successfully this year, next year should be more or less the same.”
“I'll wait until the policies and requirements become clearer before I start preparing.”
These thoughts are understandable. However, they may also be misleading.
Here's the reality:
CSCA cutoff scores are unlikely to remain at their current, relatively low levels. In fact, they will likely rise – steadily and year after year.

Why Will CSCA Cutoff Scores Continue to Rise?
*There are three key reasons why CSCA cutoff scores are expected to increase over time.
1. Early stage advantage is fading.
When CSCA was new, few students were prepared and schools were still adapting. Cutoff scores were set low. That phase is ending.
2. More students = stronger competition.
As awareness grows, more applicants will take CSCA seriously. More test-takers mean higher scores – and higher cutoff scores.
3.Top programs will demand top scores.
Popular cities, competitive majors, and scholarship-heavy schools will use CSCA to filter candidates. A passing score won't be enough – only a high score will stand out.
The window for "easy" CSCA cutoff scores is closing. Early preparation is no longer optional – it's the only way to stay competitive.
The Shift
Before: Having any CSCA score at all gave you an advantage over those who did not take the exam. It was a differentiator, not a strict requirement.
Soon: Simply having a CSCA score will no longer be enough. Only a sufficiently high CSCA score will give you a meaningful advantage in a competitive applicant pool.
The Key to Success: Early Planning
For international students applying to Chinese undergraduate programs, early planning is no longer optional – it is essential.
Start by asking yourself the following questions:
✅ Does your target university require CSCA?
Not all universities have adopted CSCA yet. Knowing where you stand is the first step.
✅ Is your chosen major highly competitive?
Majors like Computer Science, Business, Engineering, and Medicine are already saturated with strong applicants – CSCA scores will matter even more in these fields.
✅ Among your high school grades, language scores, and CSCA – which gives you the real edge?
Identify your strengths early, and allocate your preparation time accordingly.
✅ If there are still CSCA-free universities this year – should you seize the opportunity now?
If your target program does not yet require CSCA, applying sooner rather than later may be a strategic advantage.
✅ If your target school requires CSCA – should you start preparing today?
The answer is almost always yes. CSCA preparation takes time, and scores improve with focused effort.
Advice for 2026 / 2027 Applicants
✅ Don't wait until cutoff scores rise to start preparing.
✅ Don't wait until top universities run out of seats to look for options.
✅ Don't just ask "Can I apply?" – ask "How can I improve my chances?"
This is not about anxiety. It's about planning ahead. The earlier you prepare, the more choices you have. The later you wait, the fewer opportunities remain.
