Happy Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, stands as one of China’s traditional festivals. It serves as the conclusion to the Spring Festival celebrations.

The Origin of the Lantern Festival
We not exactly sure how the Lantern Festival started, but there are some interesting stories. One story says like this. long long ago, a divine bird lost its was and landed on earth, but unfortunately, it was shot and killed. The Jade Emperor was enraged and ordered that the world be set on fire on  the 15th day of the first lunar month. At that time, an old man suggested that every household hang lanterns , decorate their houses brightly and set off fireworks to deceive the Jade Emperor . In this way, the world was saved. Since then the tradition of hanging lanterns and enjoying lantern shows during the Lantern Festival has been passed down.

Celebratory Activities
During the Lantern Festival, there are many traditions to do that bring communities together.
The most eye-catching one is the lantern show. People will make and hang colorful lanterns, big and small, round and square. Some are shaped like animals and flowers, some even show scenes from famous stories. Besides, they will also involves writing riddles on the lanterns for others to solve, which adds some fun and intellectual challenge to the celebrations.

Another exciting part of the Lantern Festival is the lion and dragon dances. Skilled performers wear colorful costumes shaped like lions and dragons, putting on lively and energetic shows. In the lion dance, the performers, dressed in lion costumes, jump, roll, and playfully interact with a ball, showing strength and joy. This lively performance reflects the lion’s meaning as a symbol of power and good luck.The dragon dance is just as amazing. A long, flexible dragon made of cloth and bamboo is carried by a team of people who move together in perfect harmony. Their movements make the dragon look like it’s flying through the sky. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a powerful symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Both dances are not only fun to watch but also an important part of the festival’s traditions, filling the air with energy and celebration.

And of course, food is a key part of festivals, and the Lantern Festival is no different. Its special food, yuanxiao (tangyuan), is central to the celebration.
Yuanxiao are small, round balls made of glutinous rice, usually filled with sweet pastes like red bean or sesame. Making yuanxiao is a lovely family activity. Families gather to knead dough, shape fillings, and roll the balls.
