Step 5 Collect Your Visa and Enter China

1. Collect your passport and visa on the date indicated on the collection slip.

2. Remember to take back all original documents (Admission Letter, JW202 Form, etc.) when you pick up your passport – you will need them after arrival.

Important: For X1 visa holders, it is advisable to enter China no earlier than 3 days before the semester starts. The X1 visa allows only a 30‑day stay upon entry; arriving too early may cause your visa to expire before you can apply for the residence permit.

Step 6 Post‑Arrival Procedures (Mandatory for X1 Visa Holders)

If you enter with an X1 visa, you must complete the following within 30 days:

1. Register your accommodation – go to the local police station within 24 hours of arrival to register your place of residence.

2. Complete the medical examination – either undergo a check‑up at the local International Travel Healthcare Centre or have your overseas medical report authenticated.

3. Apply for a Study‑Type Residence Permit – your university’s international student office will assist you in converting your X1 visa into a residence permit.

4. Purchase comprehensive medical insurance – all international students are required to have valid health insurance during their stay in China.

The residence permit application usually takes 8–15 working days to process.

Important Reminders

1. Consistency of information – ensure that your name, date of birth, and other details match exactly across all documents and your passport.

2. Make multiple photocopies – it is wise to have several copies of your Admission Letter, JW202 Form, and other key documents; keep them separate from the originals.

3. Carry originals in your hand luggage – never pack important original documents in checked baggage.

4. Visa overstay – overstaying your visa or residence permit incurs penalties (e.g., 500 RMB per day) and may affect your future visa applications.

5. Seek help when needed – if you have any questions, contact your university’s international student office or the Chinese embassy/consulate in your country.
